Plumbers in Malverne Discuss the Common Causes Behind Strange Water Heater Sounds

Ignoring Water Heater Sounds Will Haunt You!

A noisy water heater is quite scary and can indicate the presence of a poltergeist. But once that possibility has been ruled out, it’s important to figure out what’s truly causing such a racket.

While a natural reaction to scary sounds is to immediately turn and flee from the basement, ignoring those scary sounds is a much worse decision. Gas and electric water heaters tend to get loud when they need repairs, and the specific types of sounds they make can help determine what repairs are necessary.

What’s Popping?

Is the water heater making a loud popping noise? If so, it is likely that a large amount of sediment has accumulated at the bottom of the tank. Sediment buildup over time is normal and is caused by mineral deposits in the water. As the water heats, so does the sediment, causing it to whirl, pop and rattle inside the water heater. A large amount of sediment buildup can lead to serious water heater problems, such as accidental overheating of the water due to slow heat transfer. Overheating, in turn, can lead to a leak.

Sediment buildup can also decrease the water heater’s efficiency, leading to a spike in energy consumption. This is particularly true in homes that have hard water. Installing a water softener can slow down, but not prevent, sediment buildup. A water heater should be regularly flushed out by a plumbing professional as a part of routine maintenance. This can help keep sediment levels low and ensure that the water heater is leak-free and in good working condition.

Screeching Water Heaters - Yikes!

A screeching water heater is certainly right out of a nightmare. Thankfully, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for why water heaters screech: water flow restriction. A closed or partially-closed valve is preventing water from properly flowing into and out of the heater. The pressure inside the tank may be too high, causing the pressure relief valve to malfunction. Additionally, there could be a problem with the water line itself. Fortunately, these are all repairs that a plumbing professional can easily make.

When the Water Heater Crackles

The water heater is crackling. Now what?! The most likely explanation is a buildup of condensation on or around the burner. Condensation is normal and does not indicate the presence of a leak. However, if the condensation is excessive, it may be cause for concern. Too much condensation can cause the pilot light to go out regularly and become as problematic as a leak. The water heater may have inadequate venting, a problem that should be addressed promptly.
