The Benefits of Air Purifiers and UV Air Sanitizers

Everyone understands the importance of changing air filters in HVAC, but a less commonly discussed way of keeping the air clean in a home is air purifiers and sanitizers. But what exactly do these machines do, and how do they work? Keep reading to learn about the key differences and advantages of air purifiers and sanitizers.

What Is an Air Purifier or Sanitizer?

Most homes have a heater or air conditioning system with a filter that removes dust. But these only work when the air is being circulated through them, which may not happen year-round. Both sanitizers and purifiers work by either sanitizing or removing spores, allergens, and any other impurities in the air without the HVAC system running.

Air purifiers use filters to remove contaminants from the air physically. Typically this involves a primary filter for larger objects and hair and a thicker filter for things like pollen. This is often a HEPA filter that will remove almost all contaminants. There are also ionic air purifiers that work by charging the air with electricity. These charged particles attract contaminants in the air which either sink to the floor or get collected by the purifier.

UV air sanitizers work in a completely different way. While a filter is often used to remove larger particles, sanitizers use UV-C light to cleanse the air of pathogens and disease. Some versions also kill viruses, which adds an extra layer of protection for those with compromised immune systems.

The Pros and Cons of These Systems

When trying to improve indoor air quality, there are definite advantages to both of the main types.

  • UV Sanitizers are the clear choice when it comes to preventing disease. Since the UV light kills many bacteria and viruses, they are much more effective for those worried about sickness. Unfortunately, these sanitizers are not effective for all pathogens and are often less effective at removing particles like hair and dust.
  • Air purifiers are the better choice for anyone who needs to remove allergens and other irritants. Because they either trap or remove contaminants, they are typically much more effective at actually improving indoor air quality. If the purifier uses a HEPA filter, it removes particles as small as .03 microns, leaving the air fresh and clean. Since purifiers collect debris, they tend to require more maintenance and cleaning, such as regular filter changes.

There are numerous reasons to install an air purifier or sanitizer. One of the most common is allergies. By removing or sterilizing the allergens, these devices allow a lessening of runny noses, sneezing, itchy eyes and skin, and other allergy symptoms. People with asthma often benefit from the cleaner air that purifiers can provide. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as those released during painting, dust, pollen, dandruff, and mold can all trigger allergies or asthma. If these triggers are present in high amounts, almost anyone will benefit from using a purifier or sanitizer.

Indoor air quality can dramatically impact health and happiness, and almost anyone will appreciate the benefits of a purifier or sanitizer. They even improve the quality of sleep! These tools are especially beneficial in climates where the heating or cooling system only operates part of the year when air won’t pass through a filter.
