Easy Ways To Identify a Sewer Line Clog

A sewer line clog is one of those things that one can't help but deal with at home. People use sinks, showers, tubs, and toilets, and in the process, wash off debris that makes its way to the drainage - debris that can get lodged in the pipes and accumulate significantly, causing waterways to narrow down and affect the flow of sewage out of the home.

As inconvenient as this problem may be, there are many ways not just to fix it but, more importantly, to identify and prevent it so that the problem doesn't become bigger than it has to be. Here are a few of the most common signs that one is dealing with a sewer line clog in their home.

Trust Your Senses

bad smell As a homeowner, time spent at home allows one to absorb all the varying smells and noises of a home running along smoothly, and any variation to that background vibe, no matter how seemingly imperceptible, should tip one off to anything that could be going wrong at home - sewer line clogs included.

Unusual sounds coming from the drainage, such as a gurgling or bubbling noise or an unsavory odor wafting up from the same direction, could tell of a clogged sewer line. The gurgling noise may be caused by wastewater draining incorrectly or sewage coming back up the drain pipe, which would also explain the foul odor.

Either way, drain cleaning seems to be in order, as a clog somewhere in the plumbing system may be causing the incorrect drainage and needs to be cleared either with a drain snake or, in the event of a more severe blockage, hydrojetting may be in order.

Drains Backing Up

A visual inspection of a problematic drain may be the most conventional approach to identifying a sewer line clog, and often, a visual sweep of the drainage systems around the home could turn up a few drains showing a backup of wastewater. If sewage is consistently coming back up from the sewer line, and if it appears to be happening at more than one drain point within the home, then it is highly likely that this is due to a clog in the sewer main. A sewer main clog is more severe than one localized to one drainage, as it affects more than one drain point in the house and may require professional sewer line repair.

Water Draining Slowly

bathtubA blockage in the sewer line could cause a very common and annoying symptom at home - the accumulation of standing water in sinks, tubs, and other drainages around the home because these blockages don't allow wastewater to drain properly. It's easy to see why this can be attributed to a clogged sewer line, as any blockage in the system should narrow down the passageway through which wastewater flows, slowing down drainage. If left unresolved, this could close off completely, leaving homes without proper wastewater drainage and a sink or tub full of standing wastewater.
